Barrie Police investigate assault at downtown bank (update: charges laid)

Update:  2:00 p.m.

Barrie Police have laid charges after a 64-year-old Barrie man was assaulted with a small folding chair.

"The attack happened around 6:30 a.m. outside the RBC on Bayfield St. and continued inside the bank vestibule," said Barrie Police Const. Sarah Bamford.

'"The victim was taken to Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre with head injuries and serious facial injuries."

Police say both men know each other and are regular fixtures in the downtown core. 

A 34-year-old Barrie man is charged with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon and breach of recognizance.

The accused was held for a bail hearing.

One man was taken to hospital and another man is in custody following an early morning assault at the downtown RBC. 

Barrie Police were holding the scene after the attack which occurred in the ATM area of the bank at 53 Bayfield St. at Collier.

A sergeant on scene said early indications suggest the victim's injuries could be 'serious.'

Details are limited at this time as the investigation is in its early stages and it's not known if the suspect and victim knew each other.
