The Barrie Police Services Board and the Barrie Police Association have reached a new agreement for city officers and civilian employees.

The contract which covers Jan.1, 2015 to Dec. 31, 2018 includes an 8.9 percent increase over the deal's four years.

The former contract had expired Dec. 31, 2014.

"The Barrie Police Association (BPA) bargaining committee and our members believe it was a fair and reasonable contract featuring co-operation and compromise," said Tom Sinclair, BPA president.

"The four-year duration provides stability, and we are implementing measures to recognize increasing benefit costs in order ton sustain future budgets."

Sinclair added the deal was ratified with "overwhelming support."

Barrie Police has 237 sworn officers and 105 civilian members.

Police Board Chair Jim Dickie said the new agreement reflects a cooperative approach to the challenges police services face both in managing cost and supporting employees.

"With the adjustment to the management processes, increased wellness support and a joint committee to review benefits going forward, we believe that the Service is well positioned to move forward," said Dickie.
