SIMCOE COUNTY DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD

The Schulich Leader Scholarship Fund awards scholarships to entrepreneurial-minded high school graduates from across Canada who are enrolling in a science, technology, engineering or math (STEM) program. This year, two Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) students have been selected from among the 1,500 nominees.
Rabab Azeem, from Barrie North Collegiate Institute, and Corbin Bowering, from Nantyr Shores Secondary School will each receive $100,000 scholarships to support their pursuit of an engineering degree. Azeem will be attending Queen’s University and Bowering will be attending Dalhousie University.
In her nomination of Azeem, Amy Reesor, teacher at Barrie North, stated, “Rabab is one of the most capable, independent learners I have ever worked with. She is innately curious, and an innovative and creative thinker who spends her time researching, learning and iterating to help better the lives of those around her.”
Jennie Shaw, teacher at Nantyr Shores, said, “Corbin is a genuine and sincere young person who aspires to make change through his innovative perspective and ideas. He is a force to be reckoned with and I have no doubt he will continue to succeed.”
The Schulich Leader Scholarship Fund was established in 2012 by businessman and philanthropist Seymour Schulich in recognition of the increasing importance and impact that STEM disciplines will have on the prosperity of future generations. This year, entrance scholarships are being awarded to 100 high school graduates enrolling in a STEM undergraduate program at one of 20 partner universities in Canada.
This initiative links directly to the SCDSB’s Strategic Priorities under the pillars of excellence in teaching and learning and community.
