Be our guest. Join us at the Wednesday, Sept. 28 meeting.

The Rotary Club of Barrie sponsored the Barrie Huronia Probus Club in 2004.

The first club was formed in England in 1965 and the first in North America was in Cambridge, Ont., in 1987. There are over 4,000 clubs and over 300,000 members worldwide.

The name Probus stands for ‘professional’ and ‘business.’ These clubs were started to give retired and semi-retired men and women a place to meet for fellowship, friendship and fun. Rising out of membership in our club is self-generating goodwill, a sense of fellowship, people with diverse backgrounds and interests and a strong feeling of cordiality. We provide a monthly gathering for those who appreciate and value opportunities to meet others with similar interests.

Meet new people. Make new friends. Perhaps discover new interests.

“Be a friend — bring a friend” is our motto.

My husband, Tom, and I are charter members of this club and even though I was born in Barrie, with lots of contacts through my business, Tom and I were eager to meet new people. We were interested in the monthly speakers to challenge the mind. This month we have Graeme Davis from Simcoe County Forests on their 100th anniversary.

The special-interest groups have been a bonus. Prior to COVID, we enjoyed a bus trip to Chicago. We have a planned social for October of a car rally and scavenger hunt.

We were also interested in this club because there is no obligation to buy or sell as the service clubs do. We are non-political, non-sectarian, non-profit and non-fundraising.

Our meetings are at the legion at Ferris Lane/Cundles Road, the fourth Wednesday of every month. The entrance is accessible and there is an elevator. Our meetings start at 10 a.m. and we finish by 12 p.m. You can carry on your conversations downstairs at lunch if you choose to stay.
