NEWS RELEASE
SIMCOE COUNTY SUICIDE AWARENESS COUNCIL

Nov. 23, 2019 is the one day a year when people affected by suicide loss gather around the world at events in their local communities to find comfort and gain understanding as they share stories of healing and hope.

According to the World Health Organization, over 800,000 people worldwide lose their lives to suicide. That equals one death every 40 seconds. There are more deaths by suicide than from war, acts of terrorism and homicide combined.

Approximately 20 per cent more make an attempt on their lives. It is almost impossible to calculate the number of survivors as each loss is felt by so many, whether it be a family member; colleague; neighbour; friend; acquaintance; community member; or public figure.

Suicide loss survivors come together to find connections, understanding and hope, through their shared experiences. The event features a documentary that offers a message of growth, resilience and connection, followed by an opportunity for group discussion. The event begins at 12:30 p.m. at all locations.
