Barrie cop charged by SIU in shooting given next court date

Charge of criminal negligence causing bodily harm stems from a September 2018 shooting after officers responded to a robbery call

Barrie police Sgt. Michael Chytuk will have his second court date on Monday, March 4 at 9 a.m. to obtain his disclosure in a case stemming from a September 2018 shooting incident.

A 28-year member of the Barrie Police Service, Chytuk has been charged by the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) with one count of criminal negligence causing bodily harm.

On Sept. 17, 2018, a 21-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound when police had responded to a robbery in the early morning hours at an east-end plaza.

Barrie police say the officer was responding to a robbery around 4 a.m. when there was an "altercation" involving the officer and an occupant of the vehicle.

An investigation by the SIU determined that officers located “persons of interest” at a gas station on the corner of St. Vincent and Grove streets.

Two men and two females fled the scene in a vehicle. As the vehicle passed one of the officers, the SIU says Chytuk discharged his firearm at the vehicle.

The vehicle crashed into a tree a short time later at the bottom of St. Vincent Street and the four occupants inside the vehicle fled on foot.

Three of the individuals were located and arrested. While the fourth was arrested on Oct. 10, 2018 by Toronto police officers and it was discovered that he had sustained a gunshot wound.

Chytuk has been suspended with pay.
