Barrie's Madeline Lawler is set to begin her bike ride across Canada to bring awareness and raise money for the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka.

The goal is 6,000 kilometres and $6,000.

The trip begins May 22 in Vancouver and ends in Nova Scotia.

Lawler, who is 26, explains where the idea came from.

"When I started about four years ago, I began volunteering with a local bike group helping advocate for accessibility in our local community and right across Canada," she said. "I believe its so important for people to have access to a healthy lifestyle regardless of their financial situation."

Lawler hopes to ride about 100 kms per day in the prairies and 50 to 60 kms a day in the mountains.

Brian Shelley, vice-president of philanthropy, brand and community development with the Y, says they are very grateful for her efforts.

"We'll be watching and cheering her on from the sidelines."

Lawler, currently training in Vancouver, is excited about the adventure.

"Now I get to see Canada by bike and raise money for an important cause and push myself with the biggest challenge I have ever taken on."
