The Downtown Barrie Business Association (BIA), which recently had several of its board members resign, continues to move forward with a byelection to fill the vacancies.

The byelection was necessary following the resignation of six people from the board within a span of only a few days back in October.

BIA officials are now validating applications submitted for the board of management byelection, voting for which will take place from Monday, Jan. 20 until Friday, Jan. 24, 2020.

On Friday, Dec. 20, candidates will be announced on the BIA's website and byelection packages will be mailed out to BIA members. Beginning on Friday, candidate profiles can also be reviewed here

The Downtown BIA has been going through a tumultuous time.

Following the October resignations, city council also removed the city's representatives, Couns. Clare Riepma and Keenan Aylwin, from the BIA board on Oct. 28. Coun. Sergio Morales was appointed to the board as the city's representative.

Managing director Craig Stevens also announced his resignation last month to take a job with the RVH Foundation. His last day on the job was this past Friday. He told BarrieToday the recent turmoil wasn't the basis of his decision.

Working in partnership with the city, the BIA's focus is to keep the downtown vibrant for property owners, merchants, residents and visitors, and to co-ordinate both short- and long-term goals.
