Another Barrie resident has died from COVID, health unit confirms

There are 33 Barrie residents among 100 new COVID cases in region today

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported 100 new COVID-19 cases and the death of a Barrie resident in today's update (April 9).

The Barrie man who died was over 79 years old, and his case was linked to the outbreak at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre's cardiac/renal unit. He died on April 6.

The week of April 4-10 could turn out to be a record-setting seven days for the health unit. The health unit has not finished reporting for the week yet, but there have been 402 confirmed cases between April 4 and 10 and the highest number of cases reported in a week was 495 for the week of Jan. 3-9. 

Case counts have averaged over 50 per day since early April.

There are 771 active, lab-confirmed cases in the region, most of which are in Simcoe County.

The health unit has reported 1,670 variant cases confirmed to date, with 379 of those cases still active.

Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 8,418 cases of COVID-19 with 7,331 of those cases recovered and 208 cases ending in death. 

There are 38 people from Simcoe County hospitalized with COVID-19, which includes five new hospitalizations since yesterday.

The health unit has administered 116,464 doses of vaccines against COVID-19 in Simcoe-Muskoka, with 2,599 doses given yesterday. 

The new cases reported in Simcoe County and Muskoka District today include (case transmission is under investigation unless otherwise specified): 

  • Collingwood (6): Four people between 45 and 64 years old and two people between 65 and 79 years old. Two cases are attributed to community transmission and one is outbreak-related. 
  • Wasaga Beach (1): One person between 18 and 34 years old.
  • Clearview (1): One person between 35 and 44 years old whose case is linked to close contact.
  • Barrie (33): Six youth under 18 years old, 12 people between 18 and 34 years old, four people between 35 and 44 years old, eight people between 45 and 64 years old, two people between 65 and 79 years old, and one person over the age of 79 years old. Ten cases are linked to close contact and one is outbreak-related.
  • Springwater (1): One person between 45 and 64 years old. 
  • Innisfil (6): Two youth under 18 years old, two people between 18 and 34 years old, one person between 35 and 44 years old,  and one person between 45 and 64 years old. One case is attributed to community transmission and one is linked to close contact. 
  • Bradford West Gwillimbury (21): Five youth under 18 years old, eight people between 18 and 34 years old, two people between 35 and 44 years old, five people between 45 and 64 years old, and one between 65 and 79 years old. Two cases are attributed to community transmission, and seven to close contact.
  • Orillia (1): One person between 18 and 34 years old. 
  • Oro-Medonte (2): One youth under 18 years old and one person between 18 and 34 years old.
  • Severn (1): One person between 45 and 64 years old whose case is linked to close contact.
  • Midland (1): One person between 45 and 64 years old. 
  • Tiny (1): One person between 18 and 34 years old. 
  • Tay (1):  One person between 45 and 64 years old.
  • Essa (1): One person between 18 and 34 years old. 
  • New Tecumseth (14): Three youth under 18 years old, five people between 18 and 34 years old, two person between 35 and 44 years old, and four between 45 and 64 years old. Two cases are linked to close contact.  
  • Adjala-Tosorontio (3): One youth under 18 years old, and two people between 45 and 64 years old. One case is outbreak-related.
  • There are four new cases listed with location information pending and two new cases in Muskoka: one in Huntsville and one in Gravenhurst.
