Organizers behind the sixth annual Kempenfelt Cup have been forced to push the high-school hockey tournament back a few days due to next week's teachers' strike.

The popular event, which is held at the Sadlon Arena (formerly the Barrie Molson Centre), was initially scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 11, but has been rescheduled. The games will now take place Monday, Dec. 16.

On Friday, the union representing Ontario's public high school teachers says it will hold another one-day strike on Dec. 11.

The Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation (OSSTF) says Wednesday's job action will impact the Simcoe County District School Board and the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board.

The local tournament, which is hosted by the Simcoe County District School, includes several local high-school teams featuring both boys' and girls' squads.

More than 2,500 students buy out of class to attend, donning their best spirit gear and cheerleading skills.

The event is also open to the public, with an entrance fee of $5.

All proceeds from the tournament will be going to support Barrie and District Christmas Cheer’s 2019 food and toy drive campaign.

With a goal of $250,000 to raise this year in order to fill nearly 1,800 food and toy hampers for local families, Barrie and District Christmas Cheer relies on the support of the community and events such as the Kempenfelt Cup to reach their goal.

The first match-up begins at 8 a.m., with a 20-minute break at 11:30 a.m. for cheque presentations and sponsorship announcements.
