As Earth Day approaches, Living Green Barrie is gearing up for a month-long celebration of sustainability, community, and positive environmental action.

From community tree plantings and native plant sales to eco-friendly workshops, there’s something for everyone to get involved in and make a difference.

Throughout the spring, Living Green Barrie is hosting a series of events aimed at promoting environmental awareness and fostering a deeper connection to our planet. Learn practical tips and tricks to live a greener lifestyle and make a positive impact on the planet.

Highlights include:

Healthy and Sustainable Yards Workshop: Living Green has partnered with Pollinate Barrie to help ‘green your yard’ this spring. This special workshop will help kickstart your journey towards a more vibrant and healthier yard, one that works for you instead of you working for your lawn. You will discover why replacing some of your lawn with native plants can save you money and time. This workshop on April 25 will give you essential information, access to resources, and face time with local plant experts to ask all of your questions. Organizers want to give participants the inspiration and tools to create your sustainable oasis.

Repair cafe: Living Green has partnered with the Barrie Public Library and Firebird Community Cycle on Saturday, April 27 to bring the community together to repair their stuff instead of throwing it away. On a finite planet, there is no such place called ‘away;’ it always has to go somewhere. The repair café fixers will help you fix common household items including toys, bikes, clothing, and small appliances. Handy volunteers will be there to help teach you to repair your own items and to live more sustainably and frugally.

Community tree planting: On Saturday, May 11 join Living Green for our annual spring tree planting event at Pringle Park. LG has partnered with the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority and the City of Barrie for this family-friendly fun. Come out and plant a tree or three and help your community create a new urban forest. Bring your kids and let them get their hands in the dirt. High School students can get their volunteer hours. This is part of Living Green’s goal to plant 10,000 trees in Barrie.

Native tree and plant sale: Living Green and Pollinate Barrie have joined together for their annual tree sale and pay-what-you-can plant exchange. You can pre-order your trees and shrubs and pick them up on May 24 and 25. Experts will be on hand to give you some free advice about choosing species that will work for your needs. Native species of plants and trees are the smart way to landscape. They do way better in our environment than horticultural species because they have evolved to be here. They often need less water, will grow faster, live longer, and will support birds, butterflies, and other vital pollinators. Planting more native species is a hands-on opportunity to make a tangible impact and show our appreciation for the environment we call home.

But the festivities don’t stop there. Living Green Barrie is also hosting a special fundraiser, with a focus on fun — Tacos and Trivia — on April 20. Join us for an evening of delicious food, friendly competition, ’80s- and ’90s-themed outfits, trivia, and music, and eco-conscious fun. All proceeds will go towards supporting Living Green Barrie’s ongoing initiatives and environmental projects.

“We’re thrilled to celebrate Earth Month with our community and encourage everyone to join us in taking action for a greener, more sustainable future,” says Andee Pelan, executive director of Living Green Barrie. “From clean-ups to workshops to our upcoming fundraiser, there are so many ways to get involved and make a difference. We are working tirelessly to create a progressive community full of hopeful people who want to leave the world better for future generations, but we need a lot of help.”

Living Green Barrie is a registered charity and relies on the generosity of supporters to continue their important work. To donate or register for any of these events, visit www.livinggreenbarrie.com or contact [email protected].
