The hard work is over and now it’s show time.

More than 100 top students in Georgian College’s Design and Visual Arts programs will showcase their work in the annual Scholarship Show from April 26 to May 17.

The grand opening takes place on Friday, April 26 at 7 p.m. in the Helen and Arch Brown Centre for Design and Visual Arts at the Barrie Campus. Visitors are welcome to attend the opening or drop in Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. until May 17.

At stake is more than $30,000 in awards donated by industry partners. Experts in various industries will judge student work, with awards handed out on opening night.

Erica Weusten is one of the students who will be showcasing her work.

“It’s really an honour to have some of my pieces in the scholarship show and to have my work recognized in such high regard,” said Weusten, who is a Georgian Interior Decorating alumna and will be graduating from the Kitchen and Bath Design graduate certificate this June.

“Interior design has been something I’ve been passionate about for quite some time – I realized in Grade 8 that I wanted it to be my career. It feels rewarding to know my dream is starting to become a reality," she added.

Weusten added that the scholarship show feels like a stepping stone into her career.

Weusten already has a full-time job lined up at EMCO Corporation after she graduates. “EMCO is a company that focuses on plumbing and plumbing fixtures,” said Weusten. “I had the opportunity to complete my field placement hours at EMCO's Burlington location and it was such a great learning experience. Everyone was so welcoming and such a hard-working group of people; it felt like a great fit for me.”

Weusten added that she’s made some lifelong friends while at Georgian – especially a group of girls who started with her in Interior Decorating and continued through to the graduate certificate program. “My teachers also played a huge role in my Georgian experience,” said Weusten. “I know I’ll look back and always remember what they taught me. I also know if I ever need guidance or help with a future project I can always contact them.”
