A stabbing at Rio Can Georgian Mall on Monday sent a teenager to hospital and saw one man charged with a number of offences.

Shortly after 4 p.m., Barrie police officers responded to the report of a stabbing at the upper east side of the mall.

The 17-year-old victim was transported to Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre in Barrie with non-life-threatening injuries while the suspect was located by Barrie police shortly after the incident.

Shelli Weiss, who works at a store inside the north-end mall, said it was a shock to her and must have happened fast as she knew nothing about it until her mom sent her a concerned text.

“The mall didn’t alert us of anything, so it must have happened really fast,” Weiss told BarrieToday. “I got a text from my mom who heard about it on social media and was concerned for my safety.

"It sounds like they ended up outside the upper parking lot near SportChek, but thankfully they caught the guy," she added.

A 20-year-old Barrie man has been charged with robbery, aggravated assault, assault with a weapon and fail to comply with probation. His name was not released by police.

The accused is scheduled to appear for a bail hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice in Barrie today.
