Downtown Barrie the place to be on Canada Day

From yoga and live music to walking tours and art, there's plenty to do this weekend

The Downtown Barrie BIA and the City of Barrie are pleased to partner and present Barrie’s Canada Day celebrations.

A full day of Open Air Dunlop fun is planned, ending off with the sights and sounds of classic ’70s Elton John, with tribute band Elton Sean. Enjoy the glamorous costumes, the glasses, the platform shoes and, above all, the endless hits and timeless songs of Elton John in the heyday of his songwriting and performance prowess. And the night will end with a bang with a fireworks display. Check out this Saturday’s full schedule of activities and head downtown for a fantastic day.

  • 8 a.m. Free yoga class with True You Studio. Meet in Meridian Place.
  • 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Visit the Barrie Farmers’ Market at city hall. Spring produce such as lettuce, scapes, and early berries are in season.
  • 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Free art activity. Make a paper bag beaver puppet with Art by Alexandra near CIBC, across from Meridian Place.
  • 9 a.m. Free historic walking tour with Fire & Mist Stories. Summertime in the city from years gone by. Meet Mary near the Barrie Farmers’ Market tent at city hall.
  • 10 a.m. Free yoga class with Nook Yoga at Meridian Place.
  • 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Free life drawing featuring a live model with Drawing House in Meridian Place. Drop by and try your hand at sketching.
  • 11 a.m. The Expedition Project popup by artists Jocelyn Chassie, Ryley James and Kiara Edwards. Stop by over the summer to see them create a collaborative mural project. This Saturday they’ll be set up near Donaleigh’s.
  • 11 a.m. Free public art walking tour with local artist Monica Loney. Let her guide you around downtown Barrie to discuss murals, sculptures and more. Come find her near the Barrie Farmers’ Market tent at city hall.
  • 12 p.m. Popup art activity on Dunlop Street West with Clandestinos Art.
  • 12 and 3 p.m. Rockabilly Joe, professional circus and street performer, will take to the stage at Meridian Place.
  • 12:45 and 3:45 p.m. Tex Rexman, comedy cowboy, is riding onto the Meridian Place stage on his hoverboard horse, with a sharp wit and even sharper whip cracks.
  • 1 to 5 p.m. Learn about Métis beadwork with Samantha Loney of the Métis and Me Organization and create beadwork-inspired art. Near CIBC, across from Meridian Place.
  • 1 to 5 p.m. Join Lewis the Artist for a free art and poetry activity, turning fallen branches into recycled treasures. Wear them as a bracelet or necklace, or as an accessory for your backpack or bedroom. You can also create one for a family member or a close friend. Near CIBC, across from Meridian Place.
  • 1 p.m. Free Pilates class on Dunlop Street near Meridian Place with Jim from Namaste North.
  • 1:15 p.m. The Barrie Wrestling Canada Day Clash in Meridian Place.
  • 4 p.m. Free dance class on Dunlop Street near Meridian Place with Uptempo Dance Studio. Join in and learn salsa and merengue.
  • 4:30 p.m. Cairo’s belly dancing, on the stage in Meridian Place.
  • 6 p.m. Singing of O Canada by Moving Art youth choir accompanied by Baytowne Big Band, plus a cupcake celebration.
  • 7 p.m. Salsa performance and lesson by Salsa Beats Barrie in front of the Meridian stage.
  • 8 to 10 p.m. Elton Sean is ready to crocodile rock with a tribute to the sights and sounds of the ’70s-era Elton John.
  • 10 p.m. Enjoy a fireworks show over Kempenfelt Bay, visible from multiple vantage points along the waterfront. Brought to you by the City of Barrie.
