Civic involvement inspires young volunteer at Painswick library

'When I work at the library, I become the first smile that someone sees when they walk through the door,' says Phoenix Gray

Phoenix Gray says bringing community members together and having them take part in a fun activity is the best part of volunteering with the Barrie Public Library.

A facilitator at Barrie Public Library's Painswick branch, volunteer Phoenix Gray knows firsthand the joy and rewards of caring about the broader community.

“I volunteer at the Barrie Public Library because I love the connections and sense of community that is created in these spaces," Gray told BarrieToday

Bringing community members together and having them take part in a fun activity is the best part.

“Seeing their joy and laughter throughout is what motivates me," Gray said.

In a typical day, Gray helps run community events and in-library activities for members of the community, particularly children.

“I set up the activities and help facilitate people’s experience,” said Gray.

Volunteers also help with the takedown and cleanup afterwards.

A couple of weeks ago, Gray helped run an “escape room” by setting up the space with the hidden clues and codes that must be deciphered.

“I gave them clues and hints to help them figure it out. And after one group was done, I would reset the room for the next group.”

Gray said the greatest strength volunteers bring is their ability to connect easily with others and to be flexible.

“I often have to adapt the activities and be flexible to meet the needs of those who are participating.”

For the young volunteer, library programming is all about customer satisfaction.

“What I do is work to build connections with those who come to the events and ensure they enjoy the activities," Gray added.

Over and above this, Gray says being a positive part of the community and knowing you’re affecting people’s lives make them proud.

“When I work at the library, I become the first smile that someone sees when they walk through the door.”

Basically, Gray is that kind of person who helps customers enjoy their experience at the library.

“I am that extra set of hands at the library that helps the programs run smoothly and brings people joy.”

Gray says the recognition earned from the librarians and community members is a rewarding feeling.

“I have also gotten to know my community so much better, and have built many connections.”

The volunteer experience at the local library, Gray says, has led to a strong sense of joy and purpose.

“I have experienced a sense of fulfillment and worthiness from knowing that I have made a positive impact in my community.”

Gray hopes eventually to inspire others.

“I would recommend it to anyone looking to build community, especially teenagers looking for something meaningful to fill their free time.”
