A rather snowy weekend shaping up for much of Southern Ontario.
A low pressure system currently over the Dakotas is forecast to track across Georgian Bay early Sunday and into southern Quebec by evening. Although it is a relatively weak system, it will absorb some moisture from the Great Lakes tonight and Sunday. Periods of snow will gradually develop today and continue tonight and Sunday.
Snowfall amounts will not be particularly heavy, but total weekend amounts may reach 10 to 15 centimetres.
In addition, a sharp Arctic cold front is forecast to sweep across the region Sunday afternoon. A sudden drop in temperature from near the freezing mark may make snow-covered roads rather icy Sunday afternoon. Motorists should allow extra time to reach their destination especially on Sunday, with particular heed to slippery road conditions.
Snow squall warning in effect for:
- Midland - Coldwater - Orr Lake
- Orillia - Lagoon City - Washago
Snow squalls this morning, weakening this afternoon.
A snow squall extends from Christian Island to Midland to Coldwater towards Washago. The heavier snow may meander somewhat, but for the most part remain in this general orientation throughout much of the morning. It should weaken and drift northwards this afternoon.
Under the snow squall, visibilities will be significantly reduced due to the heavy snow, and snow will quickly accumulate.
Snow squalls cause weather conditions to vary considerably; changes from clear skies to heavy snow within just a few kilometres are common.
Snow squall warnings are issued when bands of snow form that produce intense accumulating snow or near zero visibilities.
Special weather statement in effect for:
- Midland - Coldwater - Orr Lake
- Orillia - Lagoon City - Washago
Following morning snow squalls, another round of snow expected tonight and Sunday.
A low pressure centre currently over the Dakotas is forecast to track across Georgian Bay early Sunday and into southern Quebec by evening. Although it is a relatively weak system, it will absorb some moisture from the Great Lakes tonight and Sunday. Periods of snow will resume tonight and continue Sunday.
Total snowfall amounts for tonight and Sunday will likely reach 10 to 15 centimetres.
Motorists should allow extra time to reach their destination due to accumulating snow and lower visibility in falling snow.
A snowfall warning may be issued if it appears amounts will be appreciably higher.
