An extreme cold warning remains in effect.

Flurries today. Local amount 5 cm over western sections. Wind up to 15 km/h. High minus 17. Wind chill minus 32.

Flurries tonight to welcome the New Year. Environment Canada is cautioning revellers that wind chill values will be near minus 30 late this evening as we ring in 2018.

Flurries New Year's Day and still bitter cold. Local snowfall amount 5 cm. High minus 14. Wind chill minus 30.

Here are the details of the extreme cold warning issued by Environment Canada:

Extreme Cold Warning in effect for:

  • Barrie - Collingwood - Hillsdale
  • Midland - Coldwater - Orr Lake
  • Orillia - Lagoon City - Washago

A multi-day episode of very cold wind chills is expected.

2017 is about to end on a very cold note. A fresh surge of Arctic air is encompassing the entire province in its icy grip.

Although winds are relatively light, the extreme cold is expected to produce windchill values below minus 30 this morning, and again tonight. New Year's Eve revellers are cautioned that windchill values will be near minus 30 late this evening as we ring in 2018.

Latest indications continue to show that these very cold conditions will persist into New Year's Day, and possibly into Tuesday before moderating somewhat.

Extreme cold puts everyone at risk.

Check on older family, friends and neighbours.

If it's too cold for you to stay outside, it's too cold for your pet to stay outside.

Extreme cold warnings are issued when very cold temperatures or wind chill creates an elevated risk to health such as frost bite and hypothermia.
