Pumpkin spice and everything nice

Hello fall. In this week's Everything King, Wendy sings the praises of autumn

Apparently, I am a life ruiner.

That’s what summer lovers call those of us who move on to the pumpkin spice of life too quickly for their liking.

Technically and officially it is now fall — the autumn of all of our lives.

Embrace it!

I totally admit I can never wait for summer to end. I find it long and sweaty with bugs. People expect me to do things outside.

I feel friendlier when I am not drenched in perspiration.

You know what the best thing about an outdoor activity is?

Going back indoors.

I know I am in the minority. I get it. I’m sure I would love it too if I was in any way sports-minded.

But, still, your pumpkin hatred is just not right.

Let me point out the beauty of this glorious season we are entering into:

  1. Those fabulous breathtaking colours. It makes that endless, boring drive on the 400 from Barrie to anywhere enjoyable. (ooh’s and aah’s really add to the journey
  2. Pumpkins are so happy. All pumpkins are attractive. It doesn’t matter if they are pale or vibrant, round or flat or have weird warty growths — all are accepted and look beautiful in arrangements. Add a cornstalk and you have the best yard décor around.
  3. Apples. I cannot love the sight and smell and the sound of a crispy apple more.
  4. Vegetable stands. I get such joy out of buying local fresh veggies from a little roadside stand. I was in an area where they still have little steel boxes and work on the honour system. ( they trust you to pay for what you purchase) It felt old-timey and wonderful.
  5. Squirrels: They are so busy hiding their nuts. They are so determined and so intense. I could watch them scamper all day.
  6. Sweaters. It's sweater weather. I love walking out of the house with a long sleeve shirt and cozy sweater coat overtop. Earth colours — beautiful.
  7. Decorations. I admit I come from a long line of over-decorators. I never met a trinket I didn’t like. Silk flowers, wooden signs, ghosts, witches, owls, straw bales, black cats – I will bring it all home and make a display!
  8.  Light up pictures. I know I am in dangerous territory here but I love them.  These are paintings with little lights embedded in the picture and they are battery operated. You enjoy your Picasso. I will admire my light up pumpkin patch masterpiece.
  9. Cats bulking up. I love how they eat and eat and eat and sleep and sleep and sleep. Oh, that’s every season. Never mind that one.
  10. The season of fun-sized candy. It is like an invitation to have all versions of sugar in the house.

I cannot think of one bad thing about autumn.

Don’t hate me because I am festive.

Well, maybe you can reserve your disgust for me for Nov. 1 when I will move on to Christmas stuff.
