BarrieToday recently reached out to each candidate for city council in Barrie's 10 wards for a 300-word profile in their own words about their background and why people should vote for them.

************************

My name is Ryan Cardwell and I have been a resident of Ward 1 for 30 years.

I have been married for 10 years to my lovely wife, Tanya, and we have two incredible boys, Chad (7) and James (2).

I am a local small-business owner, dealing in tax and bookkeeping. Before that I was a road construction heavy equipment operator (and continue casual work with a current contractor working on the streets of Barrie). When was the last time the city had a representative who could say they actually helped build the roads?

What do I hope to attain during my time in council? The same as everyone else will suffice: address our roads, road safety, property taxes, communication.

I will address our damaged roads since it took Duckworth being a two-time loser to have work started, eventually. I intend to get road construction going in our ward.

Road safety is a concern everywhere and I want to look into getting speed limits in residential neighbourhoods reduced to 30-40 km/h.

I also want people to see the results of reducing driving lanes and adding bike lanes as has been done already on Livingstone, and what that does for safety.

Property taxes increase every year, I would like to see growth paying the way for growth while taxes halt constant increases.

I will also look into asset allocation of city property and how they are cared for. When assets are left on job sites (city-facilitated projects), this equipment is paid for by taxpayers and then paid for again when replaced if stolen or lost.

Communication: By phone, email, Facebook or Twitter, city representatives need to respond to their constituency. Not every conversation is a good one, however residents deserve someone they can depend on and I am that person.
