Swinging for a cause: Big Brothers Big Sisters of Barrie and District hosts Golf for Kids' Sake event

Local organization calls on community to support its youth empowerment and mentorship programs

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Barrie and District is excitedly working on its upcoming Golf for Kids' Sake fundraising event.

Golf enthusiasts and philanthropists are joining forces for a day of friendly competition, all to support the organization's mission of empowering local youth.

The proceeds from the event are going directly towards sustaining and expanding their mentoring initiatives, enabling them to assist even more children in need of positive guidance and mentorship.

For over 50 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Barrie and District has supported, mentored and inspired local children and youth.

Through their life-changing mentoring experiences, they empower local youth to reach their full potential as individuals and responsible citizens.

Partnering with the Simcoe County District School Board, they facilitate programs both within schools and the community, reaching out to students and youth in need of positive role models and support.

The organization's primary focus is on mentoring programs that foster friendship, fun and personal growth.

“Children and youth need role models who see the best in them and can encourage them to be a part of the community as they grow into adulthood,” said BBBS Mentoring Coordinator, Glenda Barendregt.

The organization offers a variety of programs, including one-to-one mentoring and group mentoring programs. The "Go Girls" and "Game On” are health and wellness school programs available to upper-grade students.

The significance of these programs lies in their flexibility and accessibility. By incorporating mentoring into schools, they break down barriers and make it easier for volunteers to participate.

These programs help shape young minds, instilling values of self-confidence, leadership and responsibility, ensuring a brighter future for the children and the community.

“There are a lot of children that need step-up support. Each child has great potential, they need just a few more things to feel fulfilled and that is where the mentors come in to make that difference,” said Barendregt.

While Big Brothers Big Sisters has been a longstanding force for good, the pandemic brought a decline in volunteerism.

The organization seeks out a resurgence of enthusiastic volunteers willing to give their time to be positive influences in the lives of children and youth locally.

To support this organization, one can become a mentor, participate in fundraising events or donate to their cause.
