Most people are used to visiting their family doctor for aches and pains, but did you know that a Canadian Certified Pedorthist may be a great option for sore legs and feet?

For those who are experiencing pain or discomfort in their lower limbs (from the hip to the toes), visiting a specialized healthcare provider is a good option.

“Whether the year ahead is business as usual, or you have plans to increase your physical activity, our team at The Stride Clinic is here to help ensure that you are moving with comfort and ease,” explains Charlie Hutcheon, Canadian Certified Pedorthist at The Stride Clinic.

She continues, “The Stride Clinic is comprised of a small group of Canadian Certified Pedorthists (just 2 of us!) who are experts in lower-limb and foot health. We offer a range of services that suit a variety of needs. If you are currently experiencing hip, knee, ankle, or foot pain or you are simply looking for a check-up, we can help.”

When is it Time to See a Pedorthist?

It is easy to assume that some degree of discomfort is a symptom of an active lifestyle or what just happens with age, but according to Charlie, that isn’t the case.

“You don’t have to suffer through lower limb pain. It isn’t normal to have pain when you move and ignoring it can cause the issue to worsen,” she says. “We take the time to listen and answer all of your questions. We want you to leave our clinics feeling empowered and educated about your own lower-limb health.”

In addition to minor aches and pains in your legs and feet, there are a few other clues that it might be time to visit the team at The Stride Clinic. Back pain, a diagnosis of arthritis or diabetes, irregular wear patterns on your shoes, or missing out on your favourite activities because of leg or foot pain are all signs that you should see a pedorthist.

Individualized Solutions

Since there are so many different possible causes for lower limb issues, there is rarely a one-size-fits-all solution.

The initial assessment, which generally takes an hour, gives the pedorthists the vital information they need. At The Stride Clinic, the team uses cutting-edge equipment like 3D Gait analysis to help them pinpoint the problem areas.

“A typical assessment with us will include an initial discussion of health history, symptoms, lifestyle, footwear, goals, etc. From there we conduct detailed range of motion and gait analysis testing to ensure we are getting all the information we need to develop the best treatment plan,” explains Charlie.

She adds, “Our recommendations are always unique to each patient. We may suggest specialized exercises, braces, orthopaedic footwear, taping, or custom-made orthotics, depending on the issue.”

In-House Custom Orthotics

Not only do pedorthists have a deep understanding of biomechanics and anatomy, but they are also skilled at constructing custom-made orthotics and altering shoes to better suit the foot. “The benefit of custom orthotics and shoe modifications is that we can ensure that the unique issues facing each patient are addressed.”

“We offer in-house custom-made orthotics, footwear modifications, a range of orthopedic footwear, compression therapy, knee and ankle bracing, and expertise in foot strengthening exercises. We hand cast and hand make our own orthotics so you can guarantee that the treatment you are receiving is custom to your foot and your needs. We can make any orthotic for any footwear and any foot!” says Charlie.
