Since first opening its doors as P.C.Lloyd Funeral Home in 1923, Steckley-Gooderham Funeral Home has been deeply rooted in the local community, assisting families in Barrie and the surrounding area for over 100 years.

Having only experienced three changes in ownership since its inception (Walter Steckley in 1938, Bud and Linda Gooderham in 1981 and Jeffrey Scott in 1990), and still family-owned and operated today, Steckley-Gooderham has prided itself on its autonomy to grow and evolve with the community and ever-changing family traditions.

“The ‘traditional’ funeral service model isn’t being requested as often as you might think,” Scott states.

“Two days of visitation, a chapel service, a procession and interment isn’t the right fit for every family anymore – and if you’re coming to a traditional home owned by larger conglomerates, many think that’s the way it has to be.  We want to change how people think about funeral service, and work with families to always find the best way to celebrate their loved one. Whether that’s a more streamlined funeral schedule, a small, intimate celebration, a gathering and/or reception all held at the same time in one room, or having a Harley-Davidson and a motorcycle helmet as an urn present in the chapel to really showcase someone’s personality and passions, we’re here to help.”

Pre-planning is also becoming a more sought-after option, allowing the individual to be remembered the way they want to be remembered, while giving their family peace of mind. About 20 people pre-plan their services every month. The ways that services are conducted has also evolved dramatically in recent years.

“We were the first funeral provider North of the GTA to adapt all of our service offerings to be remotely-accessible,” Scott confirmed. “With the ability to leverage video and audio calling to make arrangements, online or no-contact options for paperwork, and live streaming for all types of funeral services, we wanted to ensure there are options available for everyone to celebrate their loved ones, regardless if they are near or far. We’ve worked diligently to keep families and friends supported and included."
