A 36-year-old Bradford woman was charged with distracted driving while dropping a child off at school.
On Thursday, Sept. 5, 2019 around 9 a.m., a female driver stopped beside a South Simcoe Police Service officer who was at a Bradford school for our All Hands On Deck back-to-school traffic safety campaign.
The officer saw the woman on her phone, reached out of the cruiser window and knocked on her window to get her attention. There was a child in the vehicle that was being dropped off at school.
The 36-year-old Bradford woman was charged with distracted driving. A charge was also laid for having no insurance.
If convicted of distracted driving, the minimum penalty is a $615 fine, a three-day licence suspension and three demerit points for a first offence.
Distracted driving has caused more collisions than impaired drivers. Checking a text for five seconds means that, at 90 km/h, you’ve travelled the length of a football field blindfolded. A driver using a phone is four times more likely to crash than a driver focusing on the road.
