Barrie Police officers eventually caught up to a pair of jewellery thieves shortly after their sneaky flight from the jewellery store owner.

On Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2017 at 12:20 p.m. a single male entered a jewellery store located in Bayfiled Mall at 320 Bayfield Street, in the City of Barrie. He grabbed a corner display case and ran from the mall.

The store owner took chase and caught up with the male outside the mall. He was detained but not before the display case was tossed, landing hard and breaking into pieces, strewing jewellery all over the ground.

The owner was able to detain the male until a passerby approached and offered assistance to hold the male while he collected the jewellery.

As soon as the owner began collecting the property, he saw the male he thought was assisting him help the accused up and hand him his keys. The accused male fled in the vehicle and the second male ran on foot through the parking lot.

Police were able to locate the address where the vehicle was connected and upon attending located both males inside the truck pulling up to the residence.

Upon arrest, it was learned the males were brothers and both were held at the Barrie Police Service for bail hearings Wednesday.

The 20-year-old Barrie male was charged with:

  • Theft Under $5,000
  • Mischief Under $5,000
  • Fail to Comply with Probation Order

The 28-year-old Barrie male was charged with:
