Two men have been arrested and charged following a break-in Thursday morning at an Owen Street store in the city's downtown area.

Shortly after 6:30 a.m., May 25, Barrie police officers responded to a break-and-enter in progress at the local convenience store. Investigators also received additional information about two males who had fled the store on foot, and detailed descriptions of the two suspects were provided by a witness.

Upon arrival, officers saw that a pane of glass in the front door had been broken and that the store had been ransacked.

Police were able to locate the two male suspects a short distance away where they were taken into custody.

"A considerable amount of stolen property" was also recovered, police stated in a news release issued Friday morning.

The two men were transported to Barrie Police Headquarters on Fairview Road where the investigation continued.

A 38-year-old man and a 52-year-old man, both of no fixed address, were jointly charged with break and enter, and possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000.

There was also an existing bench warrant, held by Barrie police, for the 38-year-old man for failing to attend court.

Both men were held in custody for a bail hearing, which was scheduled for later in the day.
