Barrie Fire crews work to put out a blaze at a home on Looker Drive in the city's south end on Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2024.

A Barrie family has a passerby to thank for calling 911 after noticing smoke coming from their south-end Barrie home on Tuesday.

Barrie Fire and Emergency Service received a call at 3:20 p.m. on Feb. 20, confirmed Deputy Chief Carrie Clark, adding the call came from a passerby.

The fire occurred on Looker Drive, near Essa Road and Ferndale Drive.

No one was home at the time.

“The fire was located on the second floor of the home and crews mounted an aggressive attack and had the fire under control within 30 minutes,” Clark told BarrieToday.

There were no injuries, she added.

Damage has been estimated at $500,000 and the family will be displaced for some time, Clark said.

The origin of the fire has yet to be determined, she said, adding the investigation into what caused the blaze is continuing today.
