OPP look to identify vehicle in ongoing murder investigation

Provincial police hope to identify a vehicle of interest in relation to the ongoing William Schernhammer murder investigation.

Provincial police hope the community can help identify a vehicle that is possibly linked to an ongoing murder investigation in New Tecumseth. 

On Jan. 21, 2024, human remains were discovered in Adjala-Tosorontio Township, about 40 minutes south of Barrie. 

The deceased was identified as William Schernhammer, a 24-year-old man from New Tecumseth. He had been reported missing on Jan. 12, 2024.

One individual has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder. The case remains before the courts. 

According to Nottawasaga OPP, on Jan. 12, 2024, between 12:29 and 12:49 a.m., a vehicle was seen on Parsons Road and Dufferin Street in New Tecumseth. The vehicle is described as a light-coloured vehicle, possibly a Buick LeSabre between the model years of 2000 of 2005.

"The driver and/or occupants of this vehicle may possess information that could assist in the ongoing investigation," police stated in a news release.

Nottawasaga OPP says its crime unit is continuing the investigation under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, with assistance from OPP Forensic Identification Services and Central Region Support Team, in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.
