Police corner off a section off a part of Sunnidale Park for an ongoing investigation, Sunday, April 23, 2023.

There is a heavy police presence today in Sunnidale Park, as a perimeter has been set up in a section of the park.

A Barrie police mobile command unit is also on the scene Sunday along with multiple officers.

BarrieToday reached out to the city police corporate communications by email asking if this had anything to do with Saturday night’s shooting in the city's Letitia Heights area.

A police official responded by saying they were “not in a position to confirm at this time," but did say they were following up with an ongoing investigation.

Just before 10:30 p.m., Saturday night, a man in his mid-40s was walking along the catwalk from Leacock Drive toward Kipling Place when he became involved in an altercation with a group of people.

Barrie police communications co-ordinator Peter Leon told BarrieToday this morning that the man was shot multiple times.

“He was taken to a local hospital and was then transported to a Toronto area trauma centre with life-threatening injuries,” said Leon. “It is believed that this incident is isolated.”

Leon said no arrests had been made as the investigation is ongoing and further details will be provided.
