Barrie woman killed in multi-vehicle crash in Dufferin County

A Barrie woman was killed Tuesday afternoon and her infant child sufferered non-life-threatening injuries in a multi-vehicle crash on County Road 124, south of 20th Sideroad, in Melancthon Township.

A Barrie woman was killed Tuesday afternoon in a multi-vehicle crash in Dufferin County. 

Shortly after 3 p.m., Aug. 22, emergency crews responded to a serious collision on County Road 124, south of 20th Sideroad in Melancthon Township. The crash involved seven vehicles, including a transport truck. 

Several other people in the crash also suffered injuries, according to Dufferin OPP.

"The initial investigation revealed that multiple passenger vehicles were stopped northbound County Road 124 in a construction zone," OPP stated in a news release Wednesday. "A tractor-trailer entered the construction zone and collided into the rear of the lineup of vehicles."

A 31-year-old Barrie woman was pronounced dead at the scene, located about one hour southwest of Barrie. Her name has not been released. 

Police say she was travelling with her infant child, who was transported by ambulance to a local hospital. The infant was later transported by ambulance to a children's hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

A 67-year-old man was extricated from his vehicle by firefighters and transported to local hospital with serious injuries. He was later airlifted to a Toronto trauma centre.

A 45-year-old woman and a 28-year-old man were also taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

County Road 124 remained closed for approximately 10 hours. The Traffic Collision Investigation (TCI) team of the OPP was brought in to investigate.

The investigation is ongoing.
