August 19, 1945 - August 16, 2022

It is with profound sense of personal loss we announce the passing of Dr. Howard M. Krieger.

Raised in Toronto by Bertram and Bernice Krieger (predeceased) Howard attended the University of Toronto Medical School.

He was a talented, smart and committed physician. His passion for the disenfranchised provided him with an impressive resume. In addition to a full family practice, he actively advocated on behalf of Midwives, Birthing Centres, Methadone Clinics, Geriatric and Palliative Care, HIV/AIDS, Women’s Access to Abortion and MAID. Most recently he devoted himself to providing much needed health care to transgender community. He strongly believed in equitable health care, humanity and activism.

Howard (Howie) lived a rich life beyond the stethoscope! He was easy to spot in a crowd by his famous Hawaiian shirts. On evenings and weekends, he could be found enjoying live music from around the globe. Those lucky enough to share time with him will remember him most for his wit and wisdom.

Howie loved his family most of all: Mary Lynne his partner in love and life; beloved daughters Devi (Neil) and Aara (Siobhan), dear brothers Steven (Pat), Robert (Marianne) and cherished grandchildren Kai, Zoshia and Zennon.

Many thanks to our friends, neighbours and family who have provided support in so many meaningful ways. In addition, we are extremely grateful for the care he received at The Royal Victoria Hospital, specifically the Respiratory Floor Nurses and on call doctors. Finally, heartfelt thanks to Dr. Devon Turner for his exemplary care, and his respect for Howard’s wishes. He attended to Howard with the highest level of compassion and professionalism.

A celebration of life is planned for October 2, at the Barrie Country Club,  635 St Vincent St N from 1 - 4pm. In lieu of flowers, at Howie’s request, donations to the Gilbert Center, Barrie.
