AVERELL, John “Jack”

Posted

Dad passed away peacefully at home on October 14, 2021, at the age of 97. Predeceased by our mom Rena and survived by his 4 children Derek (Elaine), Doreen, Gregor (Wendy) and Howard(Luz Marina) and 12 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. Dad was born in Blantyre, Lanarkshire, Scotland as the youngest of 9 in 1924. He was trained at 14 as a butcher then despite his mother’s wishes of him to become a blacksmith, he went on to night school and was trained as a tool and die maker. In 1963 after 3 days of soaking Scottish rain, Mom and Dad decided to emigrate the family to Canada and the wheels were put in motion.

Six months later in Feb. 1964 Dad was on a plane to find a job, and the rest of us followed in May. They settled in Brantford, Ontario where dad worked at Massey Fergusson until he retired in 1985. In their retirement they moved to Kitchener, Ontario and then Barrie, Ontario. A voracious reader and devout Christian, Dad was known for his sense of humour, selflessness, and love of a good discussion. He will be greatly missed by many. Many thanks to the entire staff at Amica Little Lake for providing Dad such a warm and caring environment for the last 5 years.

Arrangements entrusted to Steckley Gooderham Funeral Home, 30 Worsley Street – Barrie. A private family service will be held on October 19th, 2021 and interment at Barrie Union Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers we ask that you donate to the Parkinson Society Southwestern Ontario.
