Laval uses big first half to beat Montreal and capture Dunsmore Cup

QUEBEC — Hugo Richard threw a pair of touchdowns as the Laval Rouge et Or used a big first half to beat the Montreal Carabins 25-22 on Saturday and win the RSEQ's Dunsmore Cup for a second straight year.

Laval, the defending Vanier Cup champions, advanced to the Mitchell Bowl on Nov. 18 in Calgary against the Dinos, who the Rouge et Or beat in last year's national championship game.

Richard finished the game 21-of-29 for 225 yards as Laval scored 22 points through the first two quarters. Marc-Antoine Pivin and Benoit Gagnon-Brousseau caught Richard's TD passes.

David Cote kicked his third field goal of the game with 1:38 left in the fourth quarter to seal the Rouge et Or victory.

Samuel Caron mounted a late comeback attempt for Montreal, completing 28-of-45 passes for 306 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Louis-Philippe Simoneau booted a pair of field goals.

Calgary advanced to the Mitchell Bowl with a 25-22 win over the UBC Thunderbirds in the Canada West's Hardy Cup.
