Some local youth will be spreading some holiday cheer in Barrie’s downtown over the next couple of days.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association has launched a nationwide initiative – Holiday Dinner on Wheels – to offer warm festive meals for those less fortunate. Through this initiative, volunteers will drive around to various neighbourhoods in downtown Barrie to distribute warm holiday meals for those in need.

“We just want to feed the less fortunate that are in downtown Barrie,” said Saqib Mehmood, one of the volunteer organizers. “This is our first experience doing this. We’ll be handing out meals to people on the street.”

About five to eight youth will be handing out food on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. The food was donated by Popeye’s Restaurant in Bradford, and more than 35 boxes will be doled out.

“This is our community and we’d like to introduce our community to the neighbours, across Canada as well. We’d like to build our name a little bit in the community,” said Mehmood.

“Our slogan is love for all, hatred for none,” he said.

The youth will be out on Dec. 24 and Dec. 25 from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. handing out lunches to people in need in Barrie’s downtown.
