Special Olympians win big in Nova Scotia

Several Barrie-area athletes win multiple medals at National Summer Games

St. Francis Xavier University, Antigonish, NS, was host to 2018 National Summer Games.

The small town doubled in size last week with approximately 5000 supporters, volunteers, coaches and athletes competing in 8 sports.

Despite the gruelling heat, Barrie athletes representing Team Ontario racked up a record number of medals. 

These games stand as qualifiers for World Games in 2019 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Track and Field

Kristy Alford: gold 100 metres, gold 200 m, gold 4x100 relay. Silver javelin.

Brian Waring: silver 10K, bronze 3000, bronze 1500

Nick Cunningham: silver 400 m silver javelin, silver long jump, bronze shot put

Joey Eira: gold 400 m

Sam Windross: gold pentathlon. 4x100 relay

Swimming

Emily McTavish: gold 200 m, gold 100 m freestyle, silver 50 m backstroke

Sherry Hadley: gold, bronze

Softball     

Graeme Thomas: silver

Brad Burns: silver

Bocce         

Mary Ann Lewtas. Represented Ontario and played extremely close games.
