The City of Barrie is inviting residents to submit photos of their gardens for Communities in Bloom for a chance to be featured on the city’s website and social media channels.

Everyone is encouraged to plant purple (the colour of the year) as well as pollinator and native plants to help create a healthier ecosystem.

Participating is easy. Plant container projects or vegetable gardens, create outdoor art projects, tidy up by pulling weeds, sweeping the sidewalk, or clearing litter in your neighbourhood. Share photos of your efforts by June 28, 2023.

National Communities in Bloom judges will be touring Barrie July 26 to 27, 2023, to evaluate the accomplishments of the entire community (municipal, corporate, organizations, and individuals) on the following criteria: community appearance, environmental action, heritage conservation, tree management, landscape, and plant and floral displays.

In 2022, the city received a five Blooms — gold rating with special mention for the gypsy moth program, an Outstanding Achievement Award and the City of Barrie was chosen as one of six gardens in Canada to be showcased in the Gardens Canada Live the Garden Life coffee table book.

Communities in Bloom is a Canadian non-profit organization committed to fostering civic pride, environmental responsibility, and beautification through community involvement with a focus on enhancing green spaces.
