Ontario confirms 615 new COVID cases today

Public Health Ontario has confirmed another 615 COVID-19 cases in the province today. 

Over the last seven days, the province has reported 4,283 new, lab-confirmed cases. 

The province has also confirmed five more deaths related to COVID, including two people over the age of 80 and two people between 60 and 79 years old. The age of the fifth person who died has not yet been reported. 

Of today's 615 new cases, 289 were reported by Toronto Public Health, 88 by Peel, and 81 by Ottawa. A little more than half (58 per cent) of the new cases are individuals under the age of 40. 

There were 56 new school-related cases reported by the province today, including 31 student cases and eight staff cases. There have been 539 school-related cases (90 are more than 14 days old now) reported since school resumed, and those cases are spread across 335 schools (about seven per cent of the total schools in Ontario). There are currently three schools closed due to COVID. 

Since last report, labs across the province have processed another 38,196 COVID test results, and there are 68,006 tests still awaiting results.

As of Oct. 1, the per cent positivity rate (that is the number of positive results compared to the number of tests processed) is 1.3 per cent for the province. There were 40,093 tests processed on Oct. 1. 

Since January, Ontario labs have confirmed 54,814 cases of COVID-19, and Public Health Ontario has reported 46,360 recoveries and 2,980 cases ending in death. 

There are 5,474 active, lab-confirmed cases in Ontario based on today's epidemiological report, and 176 of those cases are individuals who have been hospitalized with the coronavirus. There are 43 COVID patients in intensive care units including 26 COVID patients on ventilators. 

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported a total of 921 cases of COVID-19. There are now 786 cases listed as recovered. There are 94 active cases. There are no hospitalizations reported on the health unit website. Thirty-eight people have died.
