Hundreds gather at fifth annual community barbecue

'It’s really important for (MPP) Andrea (Khanjin) and I to meet old friends and reconnect, as well as meet new constituents to our riding,' says Brassard

Barrie-Innisfil MP John Brassard and MPP Andrea Khanjin held a joint community barbecue Sunday afternoon behind the Stroud Arena.

"It’s been over two years since our last barbecue get-together because of COVID-19," Brassard said. "It’s really important for Andrea and I to meet old friends and reconnect, as well as meet new constituents to our riding.”

Even though it was a rainy day, hundreds of people were arriving to take part in the festivities, special ceremonies and to enjoy the free food provided by a few local businesses, such as Domino's Pizza from Big Bay Point. Dale Chalut, who was handing out free slices, explained that “all the Domino's locations participate in community events depending on the date and location in the riding."

Another donor of food with a larger booth was the Barrie Persian Association that provided a variety of traditional foods from countries, such as Iran and Afghanistan. Special thanks were given to Fariba Tadjally and Samira Rashician for volunteering.

The largest food offering was 1,000 burgers and hot dogs with condiments and drinks courtesy of Brassard and Khanjin. A special thanks was made to Rotary Club of Innisfil's Al Gilchrist for helping to organize over a hundred volunteers to assist with the community event.

Other activities included face painting for the kids and a cotton candy booth. Entertainment was provided by Rose Jones, who played guitar and sang a repertoire of popular songs.

Also on display was the Innisfil fire truck and a host of police officers from South Simcoe and Barrie.

Seventy residents were recognized for their service to the community of Barrie-Innisfil. Those selected were nominated by local peers. Each person received a certificate in recognition of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee (70 years) Volunteer Award, as well as a special minted Jubilee coin. Throughout the early afternoon, many of these awards were presented by Brassard.

One special award was presented to Yves Laferriere, who is a member of the Knights of Columbus, for his special community involvement.

"I enjoy working in the community and often volunteer to help out wherever I can," he said.
