Fireworks, birthday cake and wrestling action: Barrie celebrates Canada Day

Thousands enjoy Promenade Days to mark Canada 150

Barrie's celebration of Canada's 150th birthday was a sea of red and white and chockablock with sights and sounds for Promenade Days.

Thousands of people clad in Canada t-shirts and many carrying flags strolled the downtown to take in the food, retail vendors and a variety of street performers, musicians and bands.

A 200 pound birthday cake made by Cakes By Design was served up to waiting spectators by Mayor Jeff Lehman, Councillor Rose Romita, Ontario PC leader Patrick Brown, MPP Ann Hoggarth and MPs Alex Nuttall and John Brassard.

It was a day for everyone to enjoy and some political leaders made it a family affair including Mayor Lehman with daughter Cassie and Patrick Brown with nephew Harry on his shoulders and Colton at his side during the cake cutting.

Barrie Wrestling put on an action-packed, entertaining show in front of a big crowd at the Five Points with its 'Canada Day Clash.'

The weather cooperated with only a smattering of rain early in the afternoon.

The skies cleared and were perfect for the massive fireworks show that capped Canada's big birthday.

Mayor Lehman tweeted that a crowd of 30,000 people gathered at the waterfront to take in the magical display over Kempenfelt Bay.
