FRIENDS OF WYE MARSH

“Enhancing wildlife habitats is a top priority at Wye Marsh,” says Friends of Wye Marsh executive director, Kim Hacker. “With every turtle species in Ontario listed as endangered, threatened, or a species of special concern, we need to do everything we can to make sure they have a place to thrive,” she says.
As a result, the not-for-profit organization will be celebrating the restoration of a popular turtle nesting site at Wye Marsh this Saturday, May 18.
Morning visitors to Wye Marsh will have the chance to join in a variety of Turtle Nursery Shenanigans at 11 a.m. as a special mystery guest takes part in the opening ceremonies, which will be followed by storytelling, snacks, and the chance to make a unique souvenir leather medallion.
Open-air concerts will be performed by acclaimed children’s musician Pete Moss, the Bay Sound Children's Choir and Little Treble Makers, as well as award-winning rock artist Nick Howell starting at 11:30 a.m.
At 2:30 p.m., the Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre will be hosting a birthday party for Sonic the Snapping Turtle, and sharing turtle crossing safety tips with guests.
All activities included with the price of admission, and musician profiles can be found online.
This NatureHood project was completed with the generous support of Nature Canada and TD Friends of the Environment, and will benefit Snapping Turtles, Painted Turtles and other species of concern at Wye Marsh.
The Friends of Wye Marsh is a not-for-profit charitable organization taking care of 3,000 acres of provincially significant wetlands and federal forests in the Heart of Georgian Bay. Located at the mouth of the Wye River, near Midland, this National Wildlife Area and internationally recognized Important Birding Area is home to a vast array of species, including Trumpeter Swans.
