Simon and Garfunkel would be shocked at how ‘the sound of silence’ in many parts of Oro-Medonte has been replaced by aggregate trucks shifting through the gears or the deafening roar of engine brakes.

About 10 years ago we moved up from Toronto to enjoy the peace and quiet of pastoral Oro-Medonte.

Sure, there was the odd truck on Old Barrie Road, regular-size dump trucks that most of us have experienced for years, but somehow in the ensuing time, trucks have become longer, larger and noisier.

It would be impossible for us to drive to Orillia along Old Barrie Road and not pass a significant number of these 25-or-more-ton vehicles. Driving up a hill and passing one coming the other way takes a strong faith that the driver won’t reach for a cigarette or his CB and swerve into your lane.

I appreciate the work of the OPP in the Orillia area, but I have yet to see one of these monsters pulled over for speeding.

My fondest hope would be reduced speed limits on Old Barrie Road and on the several lines that are designated as haul routes.

We may never again hear ‘the sound of silence,’ but we may all feel a little safer.
