Sonder Studio and Events is the newest enterprise to pop up in the city’s east end and its owner is hoping people will come by and see what is going on.
Located at the corner of Penetang and St. Vincent streets, Sonder Studio and Events is a shared-space building that owners Winter Jade and Angela Caswell hope will become a community hub for entrepreneurial businesses and start-ups.
Jade opened the business in October and is starting to see many events on the schedule already.
“I really like community involvement, so I called one of my really good friends and over a glass of wine told her about my idea,” said Jade. “From that chat we are now hosting a number of classes and local markets and it's really going well.”
Renovations on 132 Penetang St. began at the end of July and took a few months to become transformed just the way Jade wanted.
“This space allowed us the opportunity to do the things we want,” said Jade. “We wanted to facilitate our own events, our own workshops and yoga classes. We have a lot of friends who are entrepreneurs that create their own stuff and teach their own classes. This is a space for them to do all of that without having to be weighed down by their own physical building.”
Photographers, artisans and even an author launching a book at the end of the month call Sonder Studio home and despite Jade’s background being in business, she said this is what she loves.
“This is so community driven, so locally supportive,” said Jade. “I have so many people popping in just to see what we’re doing. It is a far cry from what was here before, nothing against the shop that was here ... but rather just a different feel.”
On Thursday Nov. 28, a Shop Local Market Holiday Soiree will occur in the space, starting at 6 p.m.
The schedule of other events and classes happening are on Sonder’s social media pages which can be found on their website.
