Custom-built waterfront home offers year-round adventure

Stately Lagoon City family home has room for everyone

As summer winds down and we head into fall, doesn’t a sprawling, Floridian architectural style home sound awfully tempting?

The Lagoon City community is located in Brechin, Ontario on the eastern shores of Lake Simcoe—it has ten miles of lagoons and an equal number of streets. Every property is on the waterfront, either the lake itself or one of several canals.

74 Turtle Path is on the Leeward Lagoon and it’s actually two buildings joined by a solarium. The ground floor of the main building houses the kitchen, dining room, living room, music room, laundry and bathroom. Pass through the solarium to the adjoining building where you’ll find three bedrooms and a family room.

Stefanie and Don Irwin have lived in this sunny yellow home for 18 years. “The guest wing” was their name for the second building; it was the perfect spot for their adult children and grandchildren to stay when they visited.

The main building has a second storey you access via a floating staircase. The master bedroom is large, has a Juliet balcony and a big walkout. The ensuite bathroom is done in a Spanish hacienda style and has high ceilings, a massive shower and a soaker tub. It contains a large room within it, which the Irwins used as their own mini pharmacy. There’s a generous walk-in closet, its own room really, and a loft that is currently set up as an office but would make a great exercise or baby room.

The interior of the home is completely outfitted, and the grounds are too. Not only are you on the waterfront, there is lots of land and greenspace to enjoy as well. The back deck is private, with a sitting area and a cedar tree hedge; gates ensure it’s also a safe place for children to play. Nature lovers will enjoy the maple, birch and ash trees.

The Irwins made countless enhancements to the property over the years, building a three-car garage, paving the driveway, landscaping, installing that enormous back deck that wraps around the solarium, and planting trees and gardens that include stone and driftwood.

The dock is approximately 115’ long and with 30-amp service there is room for two large boats. Inspired by a waterfront home they saw in Massachusetts, the couple added a pretty red pergola and painted it Muskoka Red.

Adventure here isn’t limited to the summer months. In the winter the canals freeze over and you can skate, skidoo and cross-country ski along them. Neighbourhood kids make a big hockey rink and spend hours outdoors.

The area used to be primarily filled with seniors but a lot of young families are moving in now. The community is warm and welcoming and becoming very multicultural. There’s a restaurant in the marina, one in the local hotel and an Italian place in town.

The population is about 3,000 in the summer and half that in the winter, says Stefanie. Don recommends the beautiful, first-class marina. A great K-6 school is located nearby and there’s a high school in Orillia, reachable by bus. The Lagoon City Community Centre offers a variety of clubs and is a real gathering place.

Become a resident here and prepare to make a lot of new friends on the water. Boats sail past the house all day long.
