Ontario Provincial Police Sgt Kerry Schmidt reports, via Twitter, that the southbound lanes of Highway 400 at Highway 88 are expected to open at midnight, tonight.

He also reports there will be a partial reopening of the northbound side of the highway at 6 a.m.

That section of Highway has been closed for approximately 24 hours since a horrific multi-vehicle collision Schmidt described as apocalyptic occurred on the northbound lanes at about 11:30 on Tuesday, Oct. 31.

It is believed that the driver of a transport carrying fuel failed to notice traffic had stopped for another crash that had happened further up the northbound lanes about 45 minutes before.

She slammed into the slow moving traffic resulting in an intense fire that burned hundreds of feet into the air, down the highway and through as many as 14 vehicles.

Three people are confirmed dead and over a dozen others were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
