York Regional Police (YRP) officers were in a slippery situation Sunday when a four-foot-long python was found in a Markham sewer.
In a tweet, the police service said this was "the stuff of nightmares" and that YRP "has seen its share of slippery suspects, but we weren't about to let this serpent snake away on Sunday."
The accompanying photo shows a brown spotted snake with its tail wrapped around a sewer grate, oddly beside a carton of pineapple juice.
Officers were able to carefully remove the reptile from the sewer and kept it until it was able to be re-homed by the City of Markham's animal services.
Police did not say how the snake might have ended up in sewer.
Reptiles are on the list of prohibited animals under the city's animal control bylaw, which includes "any member of the family Pythonidae" — meaning pythons.
