Woman charged following alleged altercation with officer

Police say the accused refused to identify herself and assaulted an officer while being arrested

On Sunday, May 22, 2022, at approximately 9:42 am, a South Simcoe Police Service officer observed an SUV [allegedly] travelling at a high rate of speed northbound on Yonge Street in the village of Churchill in the Town of Innisfil.

The vehicle was clocked at a speed of 126 km/h in the posted 60 km/h zone. A traffic stop was conducted. The driver [allegedly] refused to identify herself and assaulted an officer as she was being arrested. A Conducted Energy Weapon (CEW/Taser) was utilized to safely take the driver into custody.

There were no injuries.

As a result of the investigation, 24-year-old Lorena Kianian Fernandez of Thornhill was charged with Assault a Peace Officer, Obstruct a Peace Officer, Speeding, Stunt Driving and Fail to Surrender Licence. She was released with a future court date.

Her licence was suspended for 90 days and her vehicle impounded for 14 days.

From Friday, May 20, 2022, to Tuesday, May 24, 2022, the South Simcoe Police Service responded to 248 calls for service.
