Investigators with the York Regional Police #4 District Criminal Investigations Bureau have charged a 20-year-old man after he stole a vehicle from Vaughan, ending up in a collision in Brampton before fleeing the scene on foot.
On Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2020 shortly after 4:30 p.m., York Regional Police responded to a report of a vehicle that had been stolen from the driveway of a residence located in the area of Rutherford Road and Simons Avenue. The York Regional Police helicopter Air2 was first on scene and located the stolen vehicle driving on Rutherford Road.
Officers in the helicopter followed the stolen vehicle and a uniform patrol car attempted to stop the vehicle, which fled at a high rate of speed. The patrol officer did not pursue out of concern for the safety of other motorists, however the stolen vehicle continued to be followed by Air2.
The vehicle drove into the Region of Peel, where it was observed travelling at high rates of speed, driving through red lights and stop signs, as well as driving over curbs and sidewalks. The stolen vehicle eventually collided with another car in the intersection of Bovaird Drive West and Great Lakes in the City of Brampton. The driver of that vehicle was taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
The suspect exited the stolen vehicle and fled on foot. He was observed attempting to carjack numerous vehicles, but was unsuccessful.
