On Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2019 at 6:55 a.m., Barrie Police responded to a report of a break and enter to a residence located on Pinecliff Crescent. From the thorough investigation that was conducted, it was determined that entry to the home was made overnight while the homeowners slept and two motor vehicles, along with some personal property was obtained.
Last evening shortly after 9 p.m., the investigating officer was on general patrol on Essa Road when he observed one of the vehicles that had been stolen the day before. A traffic stop was initiated, however as the officer approached the car, it sped off at a high rate of speed travelling on Essa Road towards Highway 400.
As police approached the intersection of Bryne Drive and Essa Road, it was apparent that a significant motor vehicle collision had just taken place. A vehicle towing a small wooden utility trailer had been struck by the fleeing car causing it to implode on impact which caused damage to a number of vehicles that were in or near the intersection.
The stolen vehicle continued to travel on Essa Road and was located abandoned near the Highway 400 off-ramp. A male driver and female passenger reportedly fled on foot and responding Barrie police officers were able to set up a perimeter and contain the area in which the occupants had ran off into. This allowed for the Barrie Police Canine Unit to conduct a track which successfully led to the arrest of 20-year old male in a nearby grocery store. The female passenger, whose identity is unknown at this time, remains outstanding.
The male, who is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice located in Barrie today has been charged with:
- Flight from police
- Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
- Failure to stop at the scene of an accident
- Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000
- Fail to comply with recognizance (two counts)
- Fail to comply with probation (two counts).
He is also wanted by two other Ontario police services for unrelated matters within their communities.
The intersection re-opened shortly after midnight and there were no injuries reported as a result of the motor vehicle collision.
