Two people arrested following downtown robbery

Victim's father says she is suffering from severe headaches and is experiencing extremely high anxiety following the attack

Barrie police have arrested two suspects in connection to Friday’s downtown robbery that left a young woman with a nasty gash on her head as the culprits took articles of clothing.

Late Tuesday afternoon, a 29-year old woman and a 31-year old man, both of no fixed address, were arrested at an east-end Barrie home after police followed up on a number of tips that had been received from the public. Both suspects have been charged with 18 Criminal Code offences.

The robbery happened Friday, Oct. 16 at around 10:25 p.m. in the alleyway behind 93 Dunlop St. E. The victim was robbed of her purse, limited-edition hot pink Doc Martens boots, and a velvet GAP jacket. She was treated at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH) for her injuries, which were caused by an edged weapon.

The victim also told police the suspects were in possession of what is believed to have been an airsoft pistol.

The victim’s father told BarrieToday that his daughter received a phone call from the investigating officer Tuesday evening informing her that two suspects had been apprehended and that her belongings had been recovered.

“She is still suffering from a persistent headache, as can be imagined, and is experiencing extremely high anxiety from the fear that she will be recognized by the perpetrators while she is commuting to and from work and that she will be assaulted again,” said the father.

“She lives with epilepsy and takes daily medication to control her seizures and because of this hit injury, we are anxious about whether or not this will worsen her episodes," he added.

The victim received a CT scan at RVH on Saturday morning after the attack, which indicated no brain swelling or fractures, the father noted.

“Our biggest concern right now is her reluctance to be outdoors and her fear of an attack from the suspects or their associates,” he said.

The suspects were also wanted for two similar offences in eastern Ontario.

They are scheduled to appear in court Wednesday for a bail hearing in Barrie.
