Traffic stop results in drug charge

MIDLAND – On December 29, 2016 at 2:42 p.m. an officer from the Southern Georgian Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) conducted a traffic stop at Reid Court and Sundowner Road in the Town of Midland, ON.

Upon speaking to the male driver, the officer detected a smell of marijuana. As a result of further investigation a quantity of marijuana was located in the vehicle.

The driver was identified as Donald James Pitter (age 34) of Tiny Township, ON.

He has been charged with:

  • Possession of a Schedule II substance for the purpose of trafficking – marijuana under 3kgs contrary to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act

The accused is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice on February 23, 2017 in Midland, ON.

The OPP remind driver’s that the Drug Recognition Evaluators can determine if a driver is impaired by drugs other than alcohol and can lay charges. Through the OPP Drug Recognition Evaluator (DRE) program, the OPP’s goal is to prevent collisions and reduce deaths and injuries caused by drivers who are impaired by drugs. Ontario Legislation carries penalties for drug-impaired driving that match those already in place for alcohol-impaired drivers.

During this time of the Festive RIDE Program the OPP is reminding drivers that any amount of alcohol or other drugs can impair one’s ability to drive.
