Tow-truck driver charged with stealing pickup's floor mats

TOWN OF NEW TECUMSETH - On Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2019, officers from the Nottawasaga Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a motor vehicle collision on Tottenham Road, between the 5th and 6th Line of New Tecumseth, involving a crew cab pick-up truck.

A local tow company from Alliston was the choice tow that arrived on scene and successfully removed the motor vehicle, transporting it from the scene to their impound lot.

Police were later informed by an anonymous complainant, that the tow truck driver had stolen the floor mats from the pick-up truck that was towed from the accident scene.

Through further police investigation, it was determined that the local tow truck driver had removed the weather tech floor mats from the towed pick-up truck and attempted to sell them on Facebook.

On Jan. 14, 2019, 28-year-old Scott Balliu from the Town of New Tecumseth was arrested and charged with:

  • Theft Under $5,000
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime

The accused was released from police custody and will attend a future court date at the Ontario Court of Justice in Bradford.
